How to stop thinking about food when you're not hungry

By Emily Smith

Being able to eat because you're hungry, without constantly thinking about food or feeling that uncontrollable pull toward snacks, is exactly the kind of thing I help women with after struggling with it for many years.

Eating on autopilot

Maybe you're pulled towards food even when you're not hungry. Maybe you don't notice you're full until afterward, or you notice you're full and still feel pulled to keep eating.

Restriction makes our brain think: wait, there isn't enough, now I need to overeat and can't stop, better get it while food is available. That's why it feels like it happens on autopilot and you can't stop it.

What helps

When we tell ourselves we can't have something, we naturally want more of it. Dieting is a form of restriction. Instead of more food rules, the work is breaking the patterns keeping you stuck with food noise, restriction, and overeating, so you can reconnect with your hunger and fullness cues.
